Pergola
Open or louvered overhead shade that can stand on its own in the yard or over a deck. A louvered roof opens for sun and closes against rain.

Open cedar beams, or a roof whose blades turn to the sun and close against the rain.
Three kinds of shade
A wood pergola gives dappled shade at noon, none at four o'clock and nothing in the rain. That solves about a third of the problem, so choose the kind that covers the rest.
| Feature | Open (cedar or pressure-treated) | Louvered | Solid cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shade | Dappled at noon, none at four o'clock | Angle the blades against the sun as it moves | A fixed solid roof |
| Rain | None | Closed, a sealed roof; rain runs to the gutters | A solid roof keeps the rain off |
| Light | Filtered through the beams | Open for filtered light and air, or closed | Fixed; it can be enclosed later |
| Made of | Cedar, with real grain and natural insect and rot resistance, or pressure-treated wood, the economical choice that takes stain and sealer | Sunspace aluminum louvers, motorized, one remote | A Sunspace patio cover, attached to the house |
| Best for | Defining or raising a space on a budget | A dining area or outdoor living room where you want control | Keeping the heat and rain off beside the house |
Sunspace louvered pergola

Open: blades edge-on, and the structure nearly disappears. Light and air come through.
Angled: the everyday position. Tilt the blades against the sun as it moves, at a button.
Closed: a sealed roof. Rain runs to the integrated gutters.
Lit: blades closed and the LED strip glowing. The LED is built into the blades, and its brightness comes from the same remote. It can join the rest of your deck and outdoor lighting on one control scheme.

Layout
One structure covers 16′ 5″ × 22′ 11″ on four posts. Posts in the wrong place ruin a furniture layout, so the layout comes first.

Four posts make a destination away from the house, over a fire pit, a spa or a far dining area.

Ties into the house and drops two posts, so the patio stays open.

Units join for long or L-shaped spaces.
We lay it out against your actual furniture.

A roof attached to the house that keeps the heat and rain off, solid, acrylic or both, and can be enclosed later.
See patio coversSome homes do both: a cover by the house and a freestanding pergola elsewhere.
