- Dark entries
What you get
- Steps and edges that show up after dark
- Fewer trips and falls
- Safer entries at night
Ambiance
Welcoming light for the deck or patio after sunset, with no harsh overhead glare.
Signs
- The deck is dark and uninviting at night
- Gatherings end early
- Dining lacks atmosphere
What you get
- Use the space later into the evening
- Different moods for different nights
- Light that shows off the build
Built into the structure
Light that belongs to the stairs, rail, cabana or pergola, on one control.
Signs
- Add-on lighting looks add-on: cables, mismatched fixtures, a transformer on a post
- You want light that disappears by day
- You want it all on one control
What you get
- LED built into the pergola blades, invisible by day and even and glare-free at night
- Stair, rail and post-cap lighting wired inside the build
- Fans and ceiling heaters on the same plan
On a two-level deck
Where the light goes

Before the boards go down
Plan the wiring before the boards go down
Good lighting depends on voltage, the fixtures you choose and where each one sits. Bad placement makes glare.
That is why the wiring is planned with the deck, before the boards go down, and by the same company that builds it. Stairs, rails, post caps, a cabana or a pergola, plus fans and ceiling heaters, go on one plan instead of becoming a second job.
